Amar Singh also told reporters later that the newly formed Congress-Samajwadi Party coordination committee “would oversee how the government is functioning”.

Amar Singh said there would be six members in the committee, including the prime minister, Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

From the Samajwadi Party, Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh will be members of the committee.

He said the committee would have its first meeting soon. After his meeting with the prime minister, Amar Singh drove to the 10 Janpath residence of Sonia Gandhi.

The Rajya Sabha MP said they would discuss with Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi seat sharing in Uttar Pradesh for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The Samajwadi Party, which backed the Manmohan Singh government in the parliament floor test July 22 after the Left withdrew support to the government over the India-US nuclear deal, had earlier suggested that the Congress should appoint Rahul Gandhi for discussions on seat sharing.
