New Delhi : Delhi High Court Friday issued notice to the Delhi Police’s special cell, asking them to file a report over a metropolitan magistrate’s allegations that his mobile phone calls were illegally tapped.
Justice G.S. Sistani directed the special cell to submit their report by Sep 24, giving details of the calls that were tapped from the judge’s mobile phone. The court also sought details from cellular service provider Airtel over the matter.
In a letter written to the chief justice in May this year, a magistrate from Tis Hazari court alleged that Inspector Rajender Singh Pathania, posted in the Special Cell, had illegally recorded his mobile phone conversations.
Seeking action against the police officer, the judge claimed that he had confirmed from Airtel that the special cell had kept his phone under observation for monitoring his calls.
The magistrate also cited earlier personal rivalry between Pathania and him. He alleged that when Pathania was the station house officer (SHO) of Samaipur Badli in February last year, he had falsely implicated the judge’s cousin and friend in a criminal case.
However, on a petition by the victims, the FIR in the case was quashed by the high court, which also reprimanded the inspector for his conduct and harassing the public.
