Islamabad : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday stressed the need to know the root causes of terrorism and said the parliament should form a strategy to deal with the issue.
Speaking in the National Assembly during debate on law and order situation, the Prime Minister said the house is sovereign and can debate for as many days as it wants and then comes up with a strategy to deal with the issue.
He said he can hold an in-camera briefing with the army for the leaders of the parliamentary parties, in which the opposition leader will also be invited, to know the real situation in tribal areas.
“This is an issue for the whole country and we must go into its root causes,” Gilani added.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to engage into dialogue with all those who want to lay down their arms and made it clear that those challenging the writ of the government will not be spared.
“We will provide them education, employment and health facilities … and if still they challenge the writ of the government, then I leave it to the house.”
The Prime Minister said that militants in tribal areas had offered the candidates their support in elections in exchange for suicide attacks on parliament.
“This is our country they had attacked Benazir Bhutto, President Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz and some opposition leaders. I want the house to debate and decide,” he added.
The Prime Minister said whatever policy the house comes up with, the government will follow it.
