Hundreds pay tribute to Mother Teresa on birth anniversary

Kolkata : Hundreds of devotees from across West Bengal poured in Tuesday at Missionaries of Charity headquarters here to pay tribute to Mother Teresa on her 98th birth anniversary.

Mother Teresa’s tomb at Mother House – a part of Missionaries of Charity premises – and her huge portrait were decorated with flowers and long prayer sessions were organised by missionary members.

“We have prayed for peace of Mother’s soul and thanked god for sending her as our saviour,” Mother’s successor Sister Nirmala, superior general of Missionaries of Charity, told reporters here.

All India Minority Forum too organised a mass prayer at Mother’s tomb later Tuesday. Besides, members of Missionaries of Charity and other city orphanages organised a special lunch for their residents.

Mother Teresa was born on Aug 26, 1910. She was a Roman Catholic nun who dedicated her life to the welfare of the sick, orphan and poor. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in 1950.

She won the Nobel Prize for peace in 1979 and died on Sep 5, 1997.
