Madhepura (Bihar) : All 75 prisoners in Bihar’s Supaul district jail escaped in the chaos that followed when floodwaters inundated the premises, officials here said.
Police sources in Supaul, about 60 km from this Bihar town which has also been hit by floods, said the prisoners escaped late Tuesday.
“The prisoners escaped to save their life when the jail premises were under five to six feet of water,” an official said.
The police are yet to begin a search for them as they are busy in rescue and relief operations after the Kosi river started overflowing its banks and surging into large swathes of Bihar affecting over two million people in 14 districts.
Supaul is one of the four worst hit districts, including Madhepura, Saharsa and Araria.
In Madhepura, 550 prisoners were shifted to the Saharsa district jail Tuesday night.
The Kosi, sometimes called Bihar’s river of sorrow, breached an embankment near Kusaha in Nepal and changed its course.
