Berlin : Numerous German peace groups are expected to demonstrate Saturday at a German air base in the southwestern city of Buechel, demanding the removal of an estimated 20 US nuclear warheads from Germany, press reports said Friday.
At least 20 American atomic warheads are reportedly still deployed underground at the German air base in Buechel where they can be mounted on German-built Tornado combat jets.
A broad spectrum of labor, student, religious and women organizations are scheduled to attend the anti-US nuclear arms rally.
There have also been unconfirmed press reports about plans for a non-violent storming of the military base in Buechel.
Around 350 American nuclear warheads remain still in Europe, according to various media reports.
Up to 130 additional warheads had been stored at the US air force base in the southwestern city of Ramstein, but the weekly Der Spiegel news magazine reported earlier that the arsenal was cleared during renovation work in 2005, and it was likely they were never returned to Germany.
According to a list handed out to US weapons inspectors, the nuclear arms may have been removed.
At the peak of the Cold War, the number of US warheads based in Europe was in the thousands as the highest estimated number topped about 7,000 in 1971.
