China quake toll 25

Panzhihua (China) : The toll in the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that hit southwest China’s Sichuan province Saturday has risen to 25, officials said Sunday.

At least 400 people were injured in the quake.

The epicentre of the quake was about 50 km southeast of downtown Panzhihua, at a depth of 10 km, according to the China Earthquake Administration.

The quake also destroyed many houses, and other infrastructure.

Panzhihua and Huili counties of Sichuan, and some areas of Yunnan province, including capital Kunming, are the worst-hit.

Most of the fatalities were in Huili, followed by Chuxiong and Panzhihua. The areas lie on the southern end of the fault line of the May 12 quake, which killed some 70,000 and injured 374,643.

At least 18,000 people are still missing after the May 12 quake.

Relief materials, including water, food and 300 tents, as well as emergency financial aid of five million yuan, were sent to the quake-affected areas.
