Raipur : A Maoist rebel escaped from ‘protective custody’ after stealing weapons from a police station in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district, official said Sunday.
The incident took place Saturday at Durgkondal police station, some 280 km south of capital Raipur. The area is considered a Maoist stronghold region.
The 27-year-old insurgent, Guddu alias Gadwa, who is a member of the local unit of the banned terror outfit, Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reached the Durgkondal police station two weeks ago and claimed he had broken ranks with the insurgent outfit and now faced a threat to his life from his former colleagues.
Guddu won the confidence of the police officers and was kept in ‘protective custody’ on the condition that he would disclose information about the terror outfit.
“Guddu stumped Durgkondal police staff Saturday morning when they found he had escaped with one assault rifle and two grenades,” Abhisek Pathak, Kanker district superintendent of police, told IANS.
“We will probe the matter and action will surely be taken against the police officers of the Durgkondal police station because now it looks like the rebel had a staged drama of having broken ranks with the terror outfit to fool the police,” he added.
