Bhopal gas survivors set up new organisation

By IANS,

Bhopal : On the eve of the 24th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy, the survivors of the world’s worst industrial disaster Monday announced the formation of a new organisation, Children against Dow-Carbide, to fight for justice.

Bhopal gas survivors Monday announced the formation of a new organisation, the Children Against Dow-Carbide on the eve of the 24th anniversary of the gas leak disaster.

The new outfit has been constituted since children played a major role in highlighting the plight of the gas leak victims, leaders of three existing organisations of Bhopal survivors said.

Three organisations – the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, and the Bhopal Group for Information and Action – claim to be working for the survivors of the disaster.

“We understand that all formalities for setting up the empowered commission on Bhopal by the central government are over and we hope to have the commission by February 2008,” Satinath Sarangi and Rachna Dhingra, both leaders of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action, told reporters here.

As many as 8,000 persons were killed and thousands injured when a deadly gas leaked from the Union Carbide plant.

Dow Chemicals later took over Union Carbide. But Dow Chemicals rejects the contention that it has inherited Union Carbide’s Bhopal liabilities.
