Mumbai attacks: Pakistani PM Gilani convenes meet on national security

By NNN-PTI,

Islamabad : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who on Sunday cancelled a visit to Hong Kong due to tensions with India, has convened a meet on national security to evolve consensus on dealing with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Gilani spent the day contacting leaders of political parties and consulting senior cabinet colleagues on the situation in the wake of the terrorist attacks that killed close to 200 people and injured hundreds.

After chairing a meeting attended by several senior ministers and advisers on security issues, Gilani convened a conference on national security on Tuesday.

The meet, to be attended by federal ministers, security officials and political leaders, will evolve consensus on the government’s future course of action to deal with the situation, officials said.

India has linked elements based in Pakistan to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, triggering tensions between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours. Pakistan has denied the charge and asked India to share evidence in this regard.

Earlier in the day, Gilani cancelled his four-day visit to Hong Kong to attend the Asia meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.

A spokesman said the visit was cancelled due to the situation in the wake of the coordinated terror attacks in Mumbai in which Pakistani link is suspected.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s House said Gilani had received “all out support across the board from all democratic forces of the country on the prevailing situation arising due to the Mumbai incident”.
