President to visit Karkare, Salaskar families Tuesday

Mumbai : President Pratibha Patil will Tuesday call on the bereaved families of Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare and police inspector Vijay Salaskar – the two officers who died fighting terrorists in Mumbai last Wednesday – to offer her condolences.

Before her visit to the homes of the two police officers here, the president will be briefed by Governor S.C. Jamir and Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on the terror strike, the state’s response to it and the situation in the aftermath of the attack.

President Patil, who is cutting short her tour of East Asian countries and arrives here Monday evening, will also visit the government-run J.J. Hospital and meet there those who were injured in the attack, official sources in the Governor’s Office said.

The president will Tuesday morning visit the family of Karkare at their Dadar residence and the family of Salaskar at their Goregaon residence, public relations officer Umesh Kashikar told IANS from the Governor’s Office.

The president will stay at the Raj Bhavan Monday night.

The chief minister, who has already offered to resign, is learnt to have got a breather for a couple of days in view of the president’s visit, mainly on the considerations of propriety and protocol.
