Havana : An international conference of health experts have agreed that health care problems in poor countries could not be met by conventional medical training and called on poor countries to adapt training of medical personnel to the resources and requirements of their countries.
Some 600 experts are currently meeting in a three-day conference that will conclude Wednesday in the Cuban capital to chalk out a strategy to reach health care to the poor people in remote areas.
Various speakers addressing the conference under the theme “Medical Training for the 21th Century,” insisted that medical schools in the poor countries must shift their emphasis on training with a social approach to solve serious health problems.
Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer stressed that his country’s achievements in this field are the result of the political willingness of the government and the effective training of human resources.
He noted that there are currently more than 199,000 youths studying medical sciences in Cuba, including some 24,000 foreign students form 101 countries.
