Melbourne : Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting’s career won’t be threatened by his chronic wrist injury, said team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris here Wednesday.
Ponting will be visiting eminent surgeon Greg Hoy here Thursday for assessment of his right wrist. He had a screw inserted in his wrist to repair tissue and tendon damage in July.
But Kountouris dismissed all speculations about the appointment, saying that it was planned six weeks ago. He said the pain Ponting was experiencing was normal and not severe enough.
The Australian captain will not miss the Test series against South Africa starting Dec 17.
“He’s got a little bit of pain in his wrist, no more than what other players carry in other parts of their bodies. He’s really not having anything of significance that he has to miss any games,” Kountouris said.
“It would be ridiculous for him to miss any games or any training at this point in time.”
Kountouris also said Ponting was treating his wrist with ice strapping and pain-killing, which allowed the cricketer to continue playing during his recovery period.
