Patna : Security was beefed up at major places in the Bihar capital, especially the railway station and a temple, after an email threat to attack the sites to protest the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya 16 years ago, police said Saturday.
Security was beefed up at Patna junction, Patna Saheb railway station and the Mahavir temple here after an e-mail threatening to blow the targets within the next two weeks was received by the state railway headquarters two days ago.
“We are not taking any chance. Special teams have been formed and maximum alert has been sounded,” a railway official said.
It was reported that the Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HuJI) sent the e-mail and threatened to attack anytime between Dec 5-20. HuJI said it would target the sites to protest the demolition of Babri Masjid Dec 6, 1992, at Ayodhya, in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Alarmed by the threat, railway authorities decided to keep vigil round the clock at the places at a meeting here Friday. “The railway has ordered security forces to go on constant surveillance around the places with sniffer dogs,” official sources said.
The three targets are popular and visited by thousands across India.
A high level meeting was held at the state police headquarters to chalk out a strategy for stepping up security. “It was decided to enhance surveillance at important government installations and public places,” police said Saturday.
