Congress surges ahead in Mizoram

Aizawl : The main opposition Congress party took an early lead in Mizoram winning three seats and leading in five more with the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) ahead in just one seat as votes polled in assembly elections were counted Monday.

Former three time chief minister and Congress leader of Mizoram Lalthanhawla won the South Tipui seat defeating F. Lalthanzuala of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) by 96 votes.

P.C. Lalthanliana of the Congress won the Lunglei North seat defeating his nearest MNF rival by 705 votes, while Congress candidate R.L. Pianmawia won the Tuivawl seat. He defeated his MNF rival by 473 votes.

According to early trends, the main opposition Congress was leading in five more seats and the MNF ahead in just one seat in counting for the 40 member state legislature.

The fight for political supremacy is between the MNF and the Congress. The MNF has been in power in Mizoram for the last two terms.
