Eight arrested in Delhi for impersonating cops, lawyers

New Delhi : Eight people have been arrested for impersonating policemen and lawyers and threatening those who owed money to mobile phone companies and multinational banks, the police said Saturday.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police acted on a complaint about procurement of cell phone connections with forged documents and threatening people. The police initially arrested Pankaj Kumar, a resident of Shahdara.

“During interrogation, Pankaj told us that he worked for Sanjeev Kaushik who had been running a recovery agency in the name of Akansha and Nagli Dham at Krishna Nagar area,” a police official said.

The police conducted a raid and arrested six people, including Sanjeev Kaushik.

“Kaushik was running the agency for last four years and was allegedly recovering outstanding dues on behalf of cell phone companies and multinational banks. He had employed a dozen people for the job who used to call people posing as lawyers and police personnel and threaten them,” the official added.

“The gang managed to extort a large sum by issuing threats of legal action to the defaulters. They procured cell phone connections against forged documents to avoid being caught. As many as 22 SIM cards and 19 cell phones were recovered.

“Deepak Kumar of Shahdara has been arrested for allegedly helping the gang to procure the cell phone connections through fraudulent means,” the police official said.
