Egypt road accident toll rises to 51

By Xinhua,

Cairo : The toll in Sunday’s fatal bus accident in southern Egypt rose to 51 after some of the injured succumbed to their injuries, a media report said.

Earlier reports said 47 people were killed and 10 others injured in the accident.

The accident occurred when the bus in which they were travelling plunged into a lake some 220 km south of the Egyptian capital.

The coach, carrying around 70 passengers, was on its way from Cairo to Minya city at the time of the accident, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

The bus plunged into the Al-Ibrahimia Lake after the driver lost control of the vehicle, Minya Governor Ahmed Diaaeddin, said.

More than 20 ambulances rushed to shift the injured to the hospital, he added.

Some 6,000 people annually die in road accidents in Egypt mostly because of reckless driving and violations of traffic rules.

On Aug 1, Egyptian authorities implemented a new traffic law with tougher punishments for lawbreakers to reduce road accidents in the country.
