First charge sheet filed in Delhi blasts case

New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS) Delhi Police Wednesday filed the first charge sheet in the Sep 13 blasts in Delhi that claimed 26 lives, charging five suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists with waging war against the state, murder and various other crimes.

Filing charge sheet in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, the Delhi Police special cell claimed the 22 accused were involved in the serial blasts and posted the next hearing to Dec 20.

In its 76-page charge sheet in the Karol Bagh blast, the police charged the accused with various offences, including waging war against the state, murder and attempt to murder under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosives Substance Act.

The charge sheet named Zia-ur-Rehman, Mohammed Shakeel, Zeeshan, Shaquib Nissar and Mohammed Saif as the main accused.

The police said investigations revealed that there were 22 people involved in carrying out the blast at Karol Bagh.

Two of those involved in the blast were killed by the police in the shoot-out at Jamia Nagar in south Delhi and 12 of them were still to be traced, the police said, adding that one accused, Mohad Mansoor Peerbhoy, is in the custody of Mumbai Police.

The police told the court that it would file supplementary charge sheet against two accused – Sadique Sheikh and Quamuddin – who were arrested two days after the serial blasts.

Atif Ameen, alleged leader of the Indian Mujahideen, and another suspect, Mohd Sajid, were killed in a gun battle with Delhi Police.

Two others – Sadiq Sheikh, an alleged co-founder of Indian Mujahideen, who was arrested in Mumbai, and Quamuddin – arrested in Ujjain, were also made accused in the case.

The police relied on crucial evidences of railway tickets, call details, mobile clips and laptop footages to nail the accused.

Saif was picked up during the controversial shoot-out at Batla House in Jamia Nagar in south Delhi Sep 19. Others were arrested on the tip-off from Saif.

A day later, the south district police arrested Zia-ur-Rehman, Saqib Nissar and Mohammad Shakeel also from Batla House in Jamia Nagar.

All the accused are natives of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh.

Ten days later, another alleged bomber Arif Qadir was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police. Some of the absconding members of the module were identified as Shadaab alias Malik, Shehzaad alias Pappu, Salman, Ariz Khan, Mohammad Sajid and Mohammad Khalid.

The charge sheet refers to the involvement of this module in the serial blasts at Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad and the fact that they procured the explosives for the Delhi blasts from Karnataka.
