Ahmedabad : The Gujarat police with the help of the Border Security Force (BSF) have been looking for three men whom villagers suspect to be Pakistanis, officials said Wednesday.
The hunt is on since Tuesday in areas in Banaskantha district near the border with Pakistan after some villagers informed police of “suspicious” behaviour of three strangers in a bus, they said.
Some villagers from Chandarwa reported to police that when they were travelling by the the bus, on its way from Bhabhar to Vav in Banaskantha district, one of the three men asked a passenger what would be the shortest route to Pakistan.
The villagers told police the three men did not speak in Gujarati and they looked like coming from another region, according to police officials.
“When these passengers reached their Chandarwa village they told others about the strange men and their inquiry. Soon the villagers reached the Suigam police station near the international border and informed authorities and a hunt was launched with the help of the BSF,” said District Superintendent of Police D.N. Patel.
“The entire region is on alert and efforts are on to trace these men. We have searchlights and CCTVs at all sensitive places and day and night combing is on,” Patel said.
Villagers are worried about the three men especially as the 10 terrorists who attacked Mumbai the night of Nov 26 had, according to investigators, come from Pakistan.
“We do not wish to leave anything to chance in our combing operations even if the whole affair turns out be a hoax,” he added.
