New Delhi: Succumbing to the mounting pressure from the Opposition BJP and Shiv Sena and some quarters in the government and the Congress party for his Karkare death mystery remark, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Abdur Rahman Antulay has reportedly sent his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Media reports say he sent his resignation on Wednesday night. He, however, has declined to comment on news about his resignation.
Antulay had on Wednesday cast his doubts on the circumstances in which Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare was killed on November 26 during Mumbai terrorist attacks. He had even demanded probe into who misguided Karkare and his aides to the Cama Hospital, rather than the Taj or Oberoi which were burning.
Antulay had also said that Karkare was exposing, for the first time in recent past, the hands of Hindutva extremists behind some terrorist bombings in the country in the course of his Malegaon blast probe.
The BJP and Shiv Sena had strongly criticized him for his remarks and demanded his resignation. The Congress had also distanced itself from his statement.
However, Muslim leaders in the country have openly supported the views of Antulay regarding Karkare’s death.
