Kolkata : The Calcutta High Court Wednesday granted bail to S.M. Moinuddin alias Pappu, who was in jail since Oct 31 for his alleged role in the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman last year.
Rizwanur’s neighbour Pappu had allegedly taken Rs.1.1 million in two instalments Sep 13 and 19 last year from Rizwanur’s in-laws Todis to separate him from his wife Priyanka.
The court said Priyanka went back to her father Ashok Todi’s house before Pappu took the money. Besides, there is evidence that Pappu never directly interacted with Rizwanur but communicated to him a couple of times through his brother Rukbanur Rehman. Hence he was not directly involved in provoking Rizwanur to commit suicide.
The court, granting bail to Pappu, said he has to surrender his passport and will not be able to leave India till the hearing of the Rizwanur case is over. Also, he has to be present in person at every hearing.
Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead Sep 21 last year near the railway tracks at Kolkata’s Patipukur suburb, barely a month after marrying Ashok Todi’s daughter Priyanka.
