Analysts rule out possibility of Pak-India war despite tension

Islamabad, Dec 24, IRNA ,Senior Pakistani analysts on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of war between India and Pakistan despite the high tension between the two countries, adding that India is just building pressure on Pakistan.

Talking to IRNA they said that war would be disastrous for the whole region and would only serve the interests of the militants.

Pakistani political/defense analyst Lt Gen (Retd) Talat Masood viewed that the chances of war are very remote though Indian attack cannot be completely ruled out.

He said the war would be disastrous for the whole region. He was of the view that India wants to develop its economy and certainly it would not like to indulge itself into a war.

“War will not serve any purpose rather it could strengthen the militants and help the terrorist elements to do exactly what they want to do,” he added.

To a question about the visit of the Interpol team to India and Pakistan, he said that India has invited the Interpol but right now it is not sharing any information with Interpol.

However, he suggested that Pakistan should not form any opinion after the statement of the Interpol chief that they are satisfied over the cooperation extended by Pakistan relating to Mumbai attacks. “They should not think as if the battle is won,” said Talat Masood.

Since independence, relations between Pakistan and India have been characterized by rivalry and suspicion. Although many issues divide the two countries, the most sensitive one since independence has been the status of Kashmir.

India has demanded the hand over of 40 suspected militants allegedly involved in the attacks. Islamabad, however, says it will not extradite any suspect, insisting that they should be tried in Pakistani courts if proved guilty.

Pakistan firmly disassociated from Mumbai terror attacks in which 200 people were killed and said there is no clear evidence available against Pakistan.

Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that evidences have been provided to Pakistan and it should take stern steps without wasting time otherwise the option of unilateral attack is open before them.

Pakistani political and defense analyst Prof. Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi when contacted said that Mumbai incident has become a global issue, therefore, Interpol is interested in getting the first hand information of the perspective of India and Pakistan on this incident and terrorism issue in general.

“Tensions are high but I think the possibility of war is extremely low because both sides recognized that war would be devastating for both the countries, however, India is building a tough pressure on Pakistan to accept its demands,” he added.

China has also asked India to remain calm as Mumbai attacks mastermind is yet to be identified.

“We hope to see the improvement of Indian-Pakistani relations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said. He indicated that Beijing was still unsure about New Delhi’s assertion that all the 10 attackers were Pakistanis.
