London : Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain feels that his successor Michael Vaughan has not yet proved himself worthy of a recall in the national team.
After stepping down as the captain in August, Vaughan retained his central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) though he played no international cricket and tasted little success in domestic games.
Vaughan led the team for five years in both the versions of the game and became the most successful English captain after taking over from Hussain in 2003.
Now Vaughan, who is considered very close to England captain Kevin Pietersen, is tipped to make a return following the series defeat in India, probably in place of an out-of-form Ian Bell.
“According to latest rumours, England are thinking about recalling Michael Vaughan for the West Indies tour, but that would be a mistake. Bringing him back at this stage cannot be justified and would create more problems than it solves,” Hussain was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
“Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of Michael’s batting and the experience he would bring as a successful ex-captain. I’m also well aware that Kevin Pietersen is close to him and may want him on the board. But the time isn’t right,” he added.
“Since retiring as Test skipper in the summer, Michael has done nothing to justify winning back a place in England’s top order,” Hussain said.
“Michael has admitted that his target is to be back in the England team when Australia come over for the Ashes series, but the way to do that is to score hundreds for Yorkshire at the start of the season. Then, as a class player in form, he would deserve another chance,” he said.
