BSP lawmaker booked under stringent law for lynching

Lucknow, Dec 26 (IANS) Arrested Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Shekhar Tewari and his three supporters were Friday booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) for lynching an Uttar Pradesh government engineer, the police said.

Tewari and his three accomplices would not be entitled to seek any kind of bail under the NSA provisions. They were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on the directions of the state government.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal said: “Action will be taken against the legislator and his three supporters as per the stringent laws under the NSA.”

According to the police, the ruling BSP lawmaker and the three men – Manoj Awasthi, Ram Babu and Vinay Tiwari – had left the critically injured Public Works Department engineer M.K. Gupta at a police station in Auraiya district after subjecting him to physical torture Wednesday night. He was allegedly lynched for refusing to cough up money for Chief Minister Mayawati’s birthday bash Jan 15.
