Kolkata : West Bengal’s principal opposition party Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Saturday met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and discussed a range of issues with him.
During the meeting at the Raj Bhavan here, Banerjee discussed the reopening of the Dunlop tyre factory in Sahaganj, handover of the unused Singur land to the farmers and the Primary Teachers’ Training Institutes (PTTI) controversies with the governor and sought his intervention into the vexed issues.
“I told the governor how thousands of PTTI teachers and students are facing trouble in the state. I also informed him that the state government has not yet returned the 400 acres to the unwilling farmers in Singur,” Banerjee told reporters later.
“I also requested him to help reopen the closed industries, including Dunlop, in West Bengal.
“We want the governor to take up with the central government the problem of these hundreds of thousands of PTTI teachers and students in West Bengal,” said Banerjee, who met Gandhi along with Pragatisil Indira Congress (PIC) supremo Somen Mitra.
The Calcutta High Court recently ruled that all 138 PTTIs in West Bengal are illegal and they have not obtained necessary approvals from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
With the court directive, the future of about 45,000 primary teachers and 30,000 students has become uncertain.
Earlier, Gandhi made a futile bid to broker peace between the Front government and the Trinamool-led opposition on the issue of Tata Motors’ Nano project in Singur. As the stalemate continued, the Tatas relocated the plant to Sanand in Gujarat.
