Harassed by father, Delhi girl jumps into river but is saved

By IANS,

New Delhi : A 17-year-old girl, who says she was harassed by her father after her separation from her minor husband, Sunday attempted suicide by jumping into the Yamuna river but was rescued by some boatmen, the police said.

The victim, whose identity was withheld, told the police that she jumped into the river near the Akshardham flyover in east Delhi around 11.30 a.m.

Dilip Kumar, who lives in a nearby J.J. colony, was in his boat and spotted her. He jumped into the water and pulled her out with the help of some people.

She was admitted to a hospital, where she recorded a statement with the police.

“The victim said she was three years old when her mother passed away. At the age of 15 her father Deepak Kumar married her to a minor in Shahadara area. But the marriage failed two months ago and she returned to her father’s home in Mandavali area,” said a police officer.

“She said that for the past few months her father had been verbally abusing her. Deepak used to ask her to leave the home and put up elsewhere,” the officer said.

The police said she decided to take the extreme step Sunday morning following a heated argument with Deepak, who works in a card-making factory.

The girl said her mother had died in a kitchen fire under mysterious circumstances.

“We have registered a case in this regard and are verifying her allegations. The victim has been sent to a shelter home,” the official added.
