Petrol tanker catches fire in Delhi, driver burnt alive

By IANS,

New Delhi : A 40-year-old man was burnt alive when the petrol tanker he was driving overturned and caught fire near the capital’s landmark India Gate, the police said Monday.

The accident took place on the Pandara Road in front of the Bikaner House late Sunday, they said.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver might have lost control while taking a sharp turn at a high speed. There was an explosion and the tanker caught fire immediately as it overturned, they said.

Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the flames could be brought under control only after three hours.

“It seems that the driver could have been trapped in his seat and could not escape. He was rescued and was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where he was declared brought dead,” said a police officer.

The police were trying to trace the owner of the tanker on the basis of its Haryana registration number. The identity of the driver is yet to be ascertained.
