New Delhi : Interpol Friday issued an international alert against the alleged kingpins of the kidney transplant scam, Amit Kumar and his brother Jeewan Raut, while another of their accomplices Dr. K.K. Aggarwal was arrested from the Rajasthan town of Alwar.
The Haryana government also recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the decade-old kidney racket run from two bungalows in Gurgaon, the state’s IT hub bordering the national capital.
Haryana made the request to the central government following a detailed report from its Director General of Police R.S. Dalal. Central Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had already spoken out in favour of a CBI probe into the multimillion-rupee scam.
K.K. Aggarwal, said to be Amit Kumar’s liaison man, was arrested in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh following disclosures from Upendra Aggarwal, a key accomplice of the kidney scamster and currently in police custody.
Twelve people have been arrested and detailed by the different investigating agencies. Police officials said more arrests were likely, prompting India to ask Interpol to issue a red corner notice against Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameshwar Raut and his brother.
Amit has been evading arrest since the international racket was exposed last week and is suspected to have fled to Canada.
Issuing the notice, Interpol said: “40-year-old Kumar and Rawat, aged 36, are both subject of national arrest warrants for illegal transplanting of kidneys, cheating and criminal conspiracy.”
Four people, including a nurse, two cooks and a driver connected with the racket were arrested Thursday.
The kidney racket has global ramifications, with patients requiring urgent kidney transplants coming as far as from the US, Britain, Greece and Saudi Arabia.
