Lucknow : Washing her hands off the controversy over Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh’s alleged involvement in releasing a communally inflammatory CD, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Saturday said it was up to the central government to decide on a probe.
“I have already recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is best equipped to deal with such a sensitive issue involving senior politicians,” she told a press conference here.
“It is now up to the central government to take a decision on the issue,” she added.
The CD, released ahead of the May 2007 assembly polls, targeted a community. It was allegedly part of the election campaign material released by Singh and senior state BJP leader Lalji Tandon.
The Election Commission had registered a criminal case against Singh, Tandon and others in April 2007.
While the BJP leadership denied any hand in releasing the controversial CD, the Lucknow police filed a charge sheet in November naming Singh and Tandon.
Earlier this week, Mayawati recommended a CBI probe in the matter.
