Probe hastened into Madurai nurse’s death

Chennai : The controversy over the mysterious death of a teenaged nurse in the Madurai house of Nagesh, a close aide of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s son Azhagiri, intensified Sunday as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) interrogated over a dozen people.

“We are proceeding in the matter with an open mind. Nothing is ruled out and we are leaving no stones unturned,” police sources said from Madurai by phone.

Close relatives of Nagesh and his servants were among those interrogated Saturday by Deputy Superintendent of Police N. Rajendran and his team.

Employed in a private hospital, 18-year-old Karpagavalli was reportedly forced to work at Nagesh’s house against her will to attend to his aged and ill mother since January. She was found hanging in the bathroom 12 days after she joined work.

The town police had closed the case as suicide, but the opposition mounted a sustained assault, indicating wrongdoing on the part of DMK leaders.

Karunanidhi later ordered a CID (crime branch) probe after the nurse’s family alleged foul play.

Azhagiri, 57, who handles the ruling party’s affairs in southern Tamil Nadu, is the elder brother of M.K. Stalin.

In the past, Azhagiri has been accused of masterminding an attack on the offices of a newspaper owned by Kalanidhi Maran and has spent time in prison after he was charged with the murder of former DMK minister T. Kiruttinan.

Out on bail, Azhagiri celebrated his birthday last week – an event not attended by Karunanidhi as he had briefly distanced himself from the Madurai strongman.
