Brussels : The European Union has welcomed the victory of Serbia’s pro-Western President, Boris Tadic, saying the “Serbian people seem to have confirmed their support to the democratic and European course of their country.” The EU Presidency in a statement late Sunday night congratulated President Tadic on his reelection for the second term in the office.
Even before the elections, EU officials were calling on Serbian voters to choose the European path and not go back to the “nationalist past.” Tadic received over 50 percent of the votes in the run-off Sunday against nationalist opponent Tomislav Nikolic, who got 47 percent of the votes.
The EU, stressed the statement, “wishes to deepen its relationship with Serbia and to accelerate its progress towards the EU, including candidate status.” Current EU Presidency is held by Slovenia.
