Nepal: strikes continues to paralyse life in Terai; MJF cadres clash with police

By NNN-NepalNews

Kathmandu : The second day of shutdown strike called by the United Madhesi Front (UMF) has hit normal life in several Terai district on Monday.

Market places, educational institutions and industries remain largely closed in Siraha, Saptari, Bara, Parsa, Mahottari, Rautahat and Dhanusha districts while vehicular transport has come to a halt in these districts.

The bandh (strike) has partially affected Sunsari, Morang, Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi and Rupendehi districts, reports say.

The Front, which is a coalition of Upendra Mahato-led Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) and Rajendra Mahato’s Sadbhawana Party, had imposed two-day bandh from Sunday demanding that the government implement the 22-point agreement signed with the MFJ last year.

Meanwhile, MFJ cadres clashed with the police at Basa area of Nawalparasi district this afternoon.

The clash started as the police tried to stop the MFJ cadres from forcing the vehicles out of the East-West Mahendra highway.

Police baton-charged and used teargas shells after the MJF cadres started throwing stones at them. Reports said at least 10 protesters were injured in the police action.
