Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh) : Leela, a 26-year old Australian Krishna devotee who battled vainly for life after being shot by a stalker, was cremated here with full Vedic rights.
Her last journey culminated in the cremation at the Banshi Ghat along the river Yamuna Tuesday evening.
“Such death and last journey is reserved only for the favourites of Sri Krishna, unfortunate though her death was,” a Hindu priest here said.
Leela’s brother Bheesma lit the funeral pyre after her body was taken out in a procession that meandered its way along the Jugal Ghat, Vihar Ghat, Sringar Vat and Cheer Ghat.
At the Iskcon temple, her body was taken around the presiding deity before being administered sacraments like tulsi leaves and charnamrit.
Temple president Devmoot Das and others offered floral tributes as the foreign and local devotees chanted the Hare Krishna hymn.
Her pyre was lit and rituals completed in the presence of her mother, father, brothers and sisters and also some embassy officials.
A man her family claims was stalking her shot Leela last week. She died Tuesday after her life support system was withdrawn.
