New Delhi : Bangladesh’s High Court Wednesday dismissed a corruption case against the countrys former prime minister Sheikha Hasina.
The court also declared as illegal the military-backed caretaker government’s move to try Hasina under the present Emergency Power Rules (EPR), online edition of Bangladeshs leading English daily The Daily Star reported from capital Dhaka.
The government said it could appeal against the verdict in the Bangladesh Supreme Court, The Daily Star said.
The former PM has been behind bars since July 2007. She had described the corruption charges against her as baseless and politically motivated. The Court also ruled in favour of Hasina’s sister Sheikha Rehana, who is in UK, and their cousin Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in the corruption case, news agency United News of Bangladesh said.
The court was of the view that the trial of an offence, which had been committed before the promulgation of the Emergency Powers Ordinance 2007, cannot be held under the EPR. Hasina, daughter of Bangladeshs founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, was the PM during 1996-2001.
