Mafia don Brijesh Singh sent to police custody

Mumbai : A city court Wednesday remanded Uttar Pradesh mafia don Brijesh Singh in police custody till Feb 21 for his role in the 1992 shooting inside a hospital here, in which two people were killed.

Singh, who was brought here from Delhi Tuesday night, was produced before sessions court judge T.U. Mulla. Delhi Police arrested him Jan 21 from Bhubaneshwar in Orissa.

Some unidentified people Feb 12, 1992, barged into the J.J. Hospital and opened fire on Shailesh Haldankar, an aide of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli. Haldankar had been admitted for treatment.

Two police constables guarding Haldankar were also killed in the shooting.

Haldankar was suspected of killing Ismail Parkar, brother-in-law of absconding underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Singh had allegedly killed Haldankar at the behest of Dawood Ibrahim.

Singh is wanted in several cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and other states.

The don is said to have entered the world of crime after his father was murdered while he was in college. Singh and his friends killed his father’s murderers in 1984.
