UN to probe alleged violations in Kenya

Geneva : The United Nations Wednesday said it has sent a mission to Kenya to assess allegations of grave human rights violations during weeks of violence sparked by disputed elections.

The mission was expected to arrive in Nairobi Wednesday with the consent of the government of the east African country, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said in a statement in Geneva.

The mission would spend an initial three weeks conducting research and gather first-hand information from various sources, including victims, witnesses, government and opposition officials and civil society organisations.

Its findings are to be made public.

“Truth and accountability are of critical importance in putting an end to the violence and preventing future human rights violations,” Arbour was quoted as saying.
