Cairo : Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa has said that the Arab Economic Summit to be held in Kuwait late 2008 focuses on development affecting Arab women.
Speaking at the ceremony of the Arab prize for special works on women issues here Tuesday, Moussa said the upcoming summit will also discuss economic, social, and environmental issues.
He stressed that there is a strong relation between the development of women and the development of societies, praising the achievements of Arab women accomplished in the past few years.
He said the road of developing Arab women is still long, pointing out that many Arabs, mostly women, are not educated. Studies, statistics, and plans of action are needed to rectify the situation, he added.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s Culture Minister Nancy Bakir said the ceremony sheds light on the issue of developing women and celebrates their accomplishments.
In her speech, she noted that the media should promote awareness on the situation of Arab women and make them more conscious and aware of their rights and duties.
The competition, organised by the Arab League, is the Arab world’s biggest in the field of women issues and witnessed the participation of 14 countries — Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, and Yemen.
