New Delhi : It is not often that Jeev Milkha Singh tees up in India, but whenever he does, he is always the centre of attraction. With Chandigarh close by, it was only natural that his family is always in full numbers. On Thursday, Jeev was being followed by his father, the legendary Milkha Singh, who is himself very passionate about the golf.
Walking with him on the opening day of the EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) Thursday was his daughter-in-law, Kudrat. The gallery also had Jeev’s brother-in-law Manish Sanwalka, also a keen golfer.
But all that family support could not help Jeev as he carded a five-over 77.

Els goes for a nine on 18th
The Delhi Golf Club bared it fangs and bit the World No.4 Ernie Els most viciously. Els, who is the top drawcard of the tournament started with two birdies in first three holes, but then hit a purple patch with three birdies in a row from 13th to 15th after starting on the tenth. But it was at the 18th, his ninth hole of the day, that the DGC showed its true colours.
After a powerful drive, Els hit a wayward second shot, which found its way into the dense bushes on the right. Faced with an unplayable lie he took a penalty drop but his pitch went back into the bushes. Yet another unplayable lie and yet another penalty drop, meant Els was onto his sixth shot, which was short of the green. He left his seventh shot ten feet short of the hole and then two-putted for a nine.
Wait, that was not the biggest number of the day. India’s Harendra Gupta went for an 11 on the first hole!

Media Centre on the ‘fairway’
With international media in attendance at India’s first-ever co-sanctioned event with European and Asian Tours, the EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters, has seen the Media Centre move from its usual position in the Club House to the fairway on the eight hole of the ‘B’ Course at the DGC.
The organisers have built a make-shift Media Centre with excellent media facilities, including wireless and broadband internet. The Media Centre is fully equipped with a giant scoreboard and also houses a player’s interview room and a dining room.
