Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure the safety and security of Uttar Pradesh migrants in Maharashtra where they are being targeted by Raj Thakeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists.
In a letter to the prime minister, Mayawati has drawn his attention to unabated attacks on migrants from Uttar Pradesh.
“Whatever is happening in Maharashtra is against the spirit of the Indian Constitution and should not be condoned under any circumstances,” she wrote in her letter.
“Constitution clearly entitles any Indian citizen to seek employment in any corner of the country; so citizens from Uttar Pradesh are well within their right to earn a livelihood in distant Maharashtra.”
Mayawati called upon the prime minister to take concrete steps to ensure the safety of the lives of hundreds of thousands of poor migrants in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
