Colombo : The Sri Lankan government has decided to ban all sporting activity in schools citing security concerns, a leading English newspaper said Thursday.
The Daily Mirror quoted L.K.K. Jayaweera, director of physical education and sports in the Ministry of Education as saying Wednesday that the ban comes into immediate effect and no sporting activity will be permitted.
“The education ministry has decided to stop all tournaments conducted by school sporting associations until further notice,” Jayaweera was quoted as saying.
The newspaper said the hardest hit by the unprecedented ban would be the country’s favourite passion – cricket.
