Beirut : Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa sponsored a “highly important” quartet meeting with three Lebanese rival leaders on Friday in a bid to reach an agreement on implementing an Arab initiative.

The “main consensus we agreed on is the candidacy of Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman for presidency,” Moussa told reporters after the three-hour meeting with opposition leader Gen. Michel Aoun, majority leader Saad Hariri and ex-President Amin Gemayel.

“The meeting covered many details seriously, some issues are agreed upon, but some others need more discussions,” Moussa said, adding that they agreed on another meeting.

Moussa arrived in Beirut on Thursday to continue his efforts to help solve the Lebanese crisis.

Shortly after his arrival, Moussa met Michel Suleiman, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and some other politicians.

Moussa’s visit aimed at convincing the two Lebanese camps to accept an Arab plan which was endorsed in Cairo on Jan. 6.

The three-point plan aimed at immediately electing Suleiman as Lebanese president and proceeding to forming a government of national unity and drafting a new electoral law.

Lebanese presidential seat has been vacant since former President Emile Lahoud ended his term on Nov. 24, 2007 and the sharply divided Lebanese parliament has delayed the elections for13 times without a consensus.
