Yangon : Myanmar would hold a national referendum on its new constitution in May 2008 and multi-party general elections in 2010, state-run Myanmar Radio reported Saturday.

Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) issued two declarations Saturday on holding a national referendum on the draft of the state constitution and on a general election for electing parliament representatives, according to the report.

Myanmar’s national convention for drawing up a new state constitution started its work in 2003 and finished in 2007.

SPDC’s first declaration said that the Myanmar State Constitution Drafting Commission is drafting the new constitution.

The second SPDC declaration said that in order to transfer power from the military to a civilian government, a multi-party general election would be held in 2010 in accordance with the new constitution.
