Fatah calls on Arab forces to end Hamas rule in Gaza

Ramallah : A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement on Sunday called for bringing Arab forces into Gaza Strip to sweep rival Hamas movement which took over the territory by force last June.

According to Jamal Nazzal, the Arab forces’ task will be “paving the way to restore the legitimacy in Gaza and opening the horizon to enable the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) forces to open the crossings before the people and free them from Hamas’ grip.”

However, Nazzal admitted that achieving such thing might not be easy for the time being due to Israel’s stance which rejects the idea and the possibility that the Arab countries will hesitate to send its troops to Gaza.

“Israel is interested in keeping Gaza under Hamas’ control to weaken President Abbas’ position in the negotiations and his demands to create a Palestinian statehood,” Nazzal said, adding that both Hamas and Israel are “afraid of a Palestinian statehood.”

But Nazzal said releasing calls for bringing Arab forces was not a bad idea though it is difficult to implement.

He added that Hamas will face two options if the call came true. One is fighting against the Arab forces and, so, destroying its ties with the Arab world and loosing a key source of its finance that comes from Arab popular donation.

The other option, according to Nazzal, is that Hamas accepts the Arab presence which mainly aims at ending Hamas coup.
