Israel tightens West Bank security following suicide-bombing threats

By Xinhua

Ramallah : Israeli army imposed blockade on a West Bank city for the second day which aimed to thwart possible suicide attacks on the Jewish state, Palestinian security sources said on Monday.

The security sources said that Israeli army prevented men under 35 years old from leaving Jenin city in northern West Bank and tightened procedures on the checkpoints.

Israel said the closure was imposed following alerts that members of the Islamic Jihad movement in Jenin plan to carry out suicide attacks on Israel.

Israeli forces also blocked a main road linking Jerusalem to Ramallah since Monday morning in a bid to prevent cars from going into Ramallah.

On Feb. 4, two Hamas suicide bombers managed to go from Hebron city to southern Israeli town of Dimona. One of them detonated an explosive belt at a commercial center in Dimona, killing an Israeli woman and wounding at least eight others.

It was the first suicide attack staged by Palestinians on Israeli soil since January 2007, when the Islamic Jihad movement carried out a suicide bombing in southern Israeli town of Eilat, leaving three Israelis dead.
