Chandigarh : Over 1,000 personnel, including women, and officials of the Chandigarh police will be on special duty Thursday morning to keep a check on young Valentine’s Day revellers in the city.
The road in the Sector 10 and 11 markets – popularly known as the ‘Geri route’ and frequented by a large number of youngsters from nearby educational institutions daily – will be a ‘no-vehicle zone’ and completely sealed Thursday.
Shops in these markets and other commercial areas of the city have been reporting brisk sales of gifts and accessories ahead of the Valentine’s Day. Most marketplaces have been decorated to attract customers.
“The police should be strict with rowdy elements but should not completely seal the market areas. Where else will the youth go?” questioned student Radhika Verma.
Barricades will be put up by the police at over 50 points across the city to ensure that the day passes off peacefully. Additional personnel will be posted around party joints and discotheques.
Security was being beefed up around girls’ hostels and at the Panjab University campus Wednesday itself, police officials said. Entry to the university campus will be restricted Thursday only to bona fide students.
The Chandigarh traffic police too are getting ready to curb traffic violations Thursday.
“All traffic violations like driving without safety helmets, not wearing seat-belts, using mobile phones while driving, playing music at high volume and over-speeding will be dealt with strictly,” deputy inspector general of police (traffic) A.S. Ahlawat said.
