Mayor inaugurates Mumbai’s biggest subway

Mumbai, Feb 14 (IANS) Mumbai’s Mayor Shubha Raul inaugurated the city’s biggest subway outside the landmark Metro cinema here Thursday.

The 250 metre-long subway in south Mumbai is the “the most modern subway in the city” and has been built according to international norms at a cost of Rs.180 million ($4.5 million), Raul told IANS.

“Painted with vibrant colours, the subway has nine entry and exit gateways, which is the largest number for any subway in the city. It also has four lifts for disabled and senior citizens,” additional municipal commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) R.A. Rajeev said.

The subway will be a tourist attraction and will connect six important roads in the locality, Rajeev said. Construction on the subway started three years back and was completed within the scheduled time, he added.

“Another subway is being constructed at Mahim (southcentral Mumbai) and will be completed by May this year,” Raul said. The MCGM would be spending around Rs.80-90 million on the project.

“We are in the process of finalising the construction plans of two more such subways in the city,” the mayor said.
