By KUNA

Sarajevo : The European Union (EU) assigned former North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leader in Kosovo French General Ive De Kemebon as head of its commission for security and legal affairs and Dutch diplomat Piter Feit as head of the political commission.

The decision is a step that precedes the announcement of the independence of Kosovo and its supervision by the EU.

A release by Kosovo’s government, quoted by a local radio station Friday morning, said that Kemebon worked with the peace-keeping forces in the Balkans and knows the region well.

It added that Kemebon and Feit will work with the office of High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana who will closely monitor the situation in the region to prevent any violent acts by the Serbian minority supported by Belgrade’s government.

It stressed that Feit took part in all talks regarding Kosovo in the past few years as an assistant to the international mediator former Finnish president Marti Ahtisaari.

The release urged the Serbian minority and all other minorities to stay calm and respect the law, stressing that the local authorities will assure the safety and security of all citizens and their properties regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Meanwhile, head of the Serbs union in the city of Mitrovica in northern Kosovo Oliver Jovanovic called everyone to avoid violence and called the Serbs to respect law and order and to use peaceful and legal ways to express their political stands.

It is expected that the independence of Kosovo would be announced in a special session in the region’s parliament next Sunday. A new logo and flag for the independent Kosovo would be chosen.
