Tehran : Iran and Syria are to set up a joint fact-finding team to probe the assassination of Lebanon’s senior Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyah, a senior Iranian official has said.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ali-Reza Sheikh Attar said during weekly Friday prayers here that the decision has been made following Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki’s talks with Syrian officials, IRNA news agency reported.

Addressing the gathering, Sheikh Attar said the joint fact-finding team would look into the root causes and dimensions of Mughniyah’s assassination so as to identify the perpetrators of the crime.

Mughniyah, deputy secretary general of Hezbollah, which has been listed as a terrorist outfit by the US and Britain, was killed in a car bombing in Syrian capital Damascus late Thursday.

The Lebanese militant group blamed Israel for the killing, which Israel denied.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also threatened Friday to retaliate against Israel for the killing, saying, “his blood will lead to Israel’s fall”.
