NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (KUNA) — In a major counter-insurgency operation, at least 20 Maoists were killed by security forces in Eastern Indian state of Orissa Sunday.
The operation, which began Saturday, is continuing in the Nayagarh-Ganjam-Kandhamal districts of Orissa, news agency Indo Asian News Service reported today, quoting Orissa Home Secretary T K Mishra.
Three personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Orissas police force were also killed in the operation, the news agency said.
The operation was launched after 15 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in Maoist attacks in Nayagarh district late Friday night.
Besides the SOG, Indian paramilitary personnel, Orissa armed police personnel and other security personnel were engaged in the counter-insurgency operation, Mishra said.
Top police officers of Orissa were directly supervising the operation, he added. (
