Kabul : At least 53 people were killed and 40 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar Sunday, the police said.
The blast occurred at a place where hundreds of people gathered to watch a dog fighting competition.
A police official on condition of anonymity confirmed that 53 people were killed and 40 injured in the explosion.
There has been no official statement on the incident yet. A Taliban spokesman while reached by media via phone did not make any comment either.
Taliban, fighting with the Afghan government and foreign troops since they were ousted following the US invasion in 2001, banned dog fighting, accusing it “un-Islamic”.
